Surprise inside

We received some lovely Asian pears from a relative. I usually love receiving fruit. But, when I cut one of these open I found this:

It was alive and squiggling around inside holes it had eaten through the fruit. I have not had another pear since.

It could have been worse. You could have bitten into it and found half of one.

Cut a little further. There might be two of them and then you can have a pair.

What des'pair' you must have felt!

I believe that worm is a delicacy is some parts of the world. Andrew Zimmerman would know.

I think that Andrew Zimmern would know too.

The pear tree right in our front yard here in Oregon has produced similar beasties.

I just cut around them, or else I'd have to dump 100 pears or so.

The grubs have to eat, too.

Regards,

Ellen

I wasn't brave enough to cut around it. Hopefully I won't get the chance to try it in the future...
